AN Illawarra dining institution is to close its doors after more than two decades of serving crepes and gourmet ice-cream.

Southern Crepes owners Peter and Kay Farthing have announced they will cease operations at the landmark eatery in lower Crown St.

They will close the business on May 1 and are in the process of telling customers.

Staff were notified about two weeks ago and many have already found employment elsewhere.

"It's going to be sad," Mr Farthing said. "It's our life, it's our social life and it's going to be a difficult change. But there comes a point when you have got to make a business decision."

Mr Farthing said the well-known property, on the corner of Harbour St, had been sold to developers.

However, all is not lost for those who will not be able to live without a dose of Southern Crepes. The couple has already discussed the possibility of opening another business after a break.

Mrs Farthing said some customers had already booked tables for the last day of business.
