Some restaurants really work from the minute they open their doors, whilst others struggle for a while to gain acceptance.

Southern Crepes in lower Crown St, Wollongong is one of the former, much to the relief of owners Peter and Kay Farthing.

The restaurant opened in a former service station/car rental business in 1982, as a result of Kay and her sister Joy Wells being unable to find somewhere for coffee and a meal after the movies.

"So we looked around, identified this as the site we wanted, decided we had to offer something which Wollongong didn't have and got on with it," Mrs Farthing said.

"It seemed to us that crepes and pancakes went with the after-the-movies eating mood."G

When Southern Crepes opened, it was to expose Wollongong diners to a wonderful variety of savoury and sweet crepes and pancakes and that format is still a winner.

"When my husband came into the business nine years ago, he brought with him some new ideas including establishing the outdoor eating area and the introduction of a blackboard menu, stepping away a little from the crepes and pancakes," Mrs Farthing said.

"More recently we have hired a chef from Sydney whose specialty is steak and seafood so the blackboard menu gives diners a wider choice."

A finalist in the BYO Restaurant category of the Restaurant and Catering Industry Association ACT/Southern NSW awards this year, the owners are looking forward to gaining votes from diners to take part in next year's competition.
